2015 - 2016 Chapter News

National FFA Week

From February 16 - 19, our chapter celebrated National FFA Week! FFA Week is held during the third week of February. This week is honored by chapters throughout the nation. To celebrate on our campus, we had spirit days and games set up on campus in the quad every day of the week. On Tuesday, to start off the week, we had a tropical Tuesday where members dressed up in Hawaiian gear and we had them plant small plugs during lunch in the quad. On Wednesday, we had members dress up in Western Gear and they made their very own butter in the quad. We had Blue and Gold Thursday in order to honor the colors of FFA! Students had to pair up to dodge flying eggs. Finally on Friday, we had Lancer Pride day and dressed up to honor the colors of our school; Black and Yellow. We nominated seven teachers for the Kiss the Cow event: Mr. Brown, Ms. Boxdorfer, Ms. Giezer, Mr. Mora, our very own Ms. D, Ms. Kern and our principal Mr. Whitten. Throughout the week students put loose change in jars for each teacher. This year Mr. Brown raised 46 dollars and was our winner! He got to kiss two Calves in front of the student body and staff. Way to go Mr. Brown!

MFE/ALA

Each year, students are given the opportunity to attend a two day conference held in Ontario, CA. Known as MFE/ALA students in their second, third and fourth year in high school can attend to learn and develop leadership skills. On 1/29-1/30, we took six members to this conference and they all had a blast. Students learned about personal development and how to succeed as an individual by participating in various workshops about leadership put on by the State Officers.

Open House

On January 12, we went up to campus to participate in Sunny HIlls' Annual Open House. We set up in front of the gym and had animals, flyers, plants, and pictures from our events to show the incoming freshmen why they should join FFA. All of the officers, Ms. D. and Mr. Kim interacted with students and their parents, encouraging to sign up for Ag. A few of our members also helped that night, and it was a lot of fun talking to everyone. Thank you to the members who helped out. Overall the event was very successful.

Orange Section Softball

Our very own chapter held Section Softball on our campus on January 16th! Schools from the Orange Section came and we had softball competitions going on all day. Schools that participated were: La Habra, Sunny Hills, Sonora,  Buena Park and Westminster. We served hot dogs, snow cones and had a lot of members get involved by helping with set-up, clean-up and serving food. We had two teams participate in the game, Ms. D's class and Mr. Kim's class. In the end, La Habra took home 1st Place. It was a long fun day for all who attended.

Our breeding project has been very productive this year. Over winter break, we had a new addition to our Lamb Family! Our breeding Ewe now has a daughter and will hopefully become someone's SAE Project this year. Alongside this little girl, we also had baby goats; two sets of twins.

Greenhand Conference

First year FFA members attended the Greenhand Conference hosted by the Orange Section officer team. The conference was held at Buena Park City Hall on November 18th during school. At the conference, greenhands experienced workshops where they had a chance to meet first year members from different schools and got to learn about teamwork, time management, and had a chance to see what officers have the responsibility of doing. This event is mainly about showing greenhands what FFA is about and gives them a chance to feel welcomed. We hope everyone who attended had a wonderful time!

On November 16, our very own chapter held the Creed and Impromptu Competition on our campus and the Orange Section schools came to compete. We provided food for the participants and the competition went very smoothly. We had main stage activities like pie-eating contests and musical chairs which were fun to watch because the members looked like they were enjoying themselves. We had games that the little kids could play for free, and it was a good way for the kids to have fun and for the members volunteering to interact with the little kids. any families and friends came to participate in the festival, and the event was enjoyable and successful! Orange Section Leadership Lock-In

On Ocotber 9th, we took 16 members from our school to Buena Park High School for the Orange Section Leadership Lock-In with the other Orange Section FFA schools, and spent the night at Buena Park High School. The first day of the conference consisted of workshops put on by the Section Officers, and we were in our uniforms for it. For a fun activity at night, we had jumpers from Big Air and a mechanical bull and had a great time having fun with our members and other members from different high schools! The next day consisted of more workshops, this time put on by some of the past Southern Region officers and more by the Section officers. The workshops were all about time management, leadership, teamwork, and peronal growth and success. It was a very fun and informational conference.

On October 17th, our chapter officers went to Indio High School for the Southern Region Chapter Officers Connference. Our officers went to this school and had te chance to interact with Chapter Officers from all of the high schools in the Southerin Region. At this conference, the Region officers put on workshops and did skits as well. The state officers weralso present at this event and put on workshops of their own. It was very interesting to participate in these workshops and meet and interact with other chapter officers, but also meet the region and state officers. The workshops consisted of time management, relationship building, advocating the FFA, and many more interesting topics.

Back to Ag. Night

On September 10th, we had our annual Back to Ag. Night; an event mainly for parents to learn about the FFA and what opportunities it has to offer for their students. The event was free, and we provided food and beverages for the people who attended. Opening Ceremonies took place, and a small introduction followed that. Once we ate dinner, the students were taken into the classrooms to talk with the officers and the parents stayed with Mr. Kim and Ms. D to talk about the program. In each classroom, students learned about the FFA side of Ag. and the SAE(Supervised Agricultural Experience) side of it. The event was meant to inform people about what to expect out of Ag. and the upcoming year, and it was a great success, with over 3oo people, students and parents, attending.

Movie Social

Our second social was a movie social that took place at our farm on September 18th. Many members attended, and they had a choice between two movies, Avengers playing in one classroom, and Monsters University in the other. The theme of the social was a slumber or pajama party, because it was at night, so many members brought friends not in Ag, along with pillows and blankets! This social was free, and students could buy snacks there. For instance, we sold pizza for $1 and candy for $0.50. The night was relaxing for the students and was meant for people to bond with other members.

LA County Fair

Students were given the opportunity to attend the LA County Fair on September 19th. The admission was $2 and we arrived at the fair at 8 in the morning. To show that the members participated, they were given a fun and interesting scavenger hunt that led them around the livestock area of the fair and allowed them to learn new things. Once the fair opened at 10 to the general public and they had finished the activity, the students were free to explore the fair, going on rides and enjoying the day with their friends. Members who were on judging teams also got to attend the fair, but to compete. We had three teams competing: Vegetable Crop Judging, Floriculture, and Veterinary Science. Our school did very well considering the limited amount of time the teams were given to prepare for the event. The Veg. Crop team won 3rd high team, with Mikai Sun, a sophomore, get 1oth place individually, Gaby Rounds, a senior, place 9th individually, and Alex Arredondo, a senior, place 7th. The Floriculture team placed 6th overall in their competition. As for Vet Science, we had Amanda Chang, a sophomore, place 3rd individually. We hope everyone who went to the fair enjoyed themselves!

We had our very first chapter social on August 27th and had 109 people attend, which was a new record for our chapter! This event was for students only, and the goal of it was for students to feel welcome in the FFA and Ag. We offered food and beverages for the members, and the event was free. As an activity, we had mud tug-of-war and regular tug-of-war, and it was great to see the students participate and enjoy themselves while spending time with their friends. A few of the chapter officers also joined in on the fun, challenging their fellow students to play. Overall, the first social was very enjoyable and a great success.

Welcome to Ag. BBQ
